A Guide To Affiliate Programs
Affiliate programs are an effective way of granting internet marketers a portion of the earnings of the goods that they promote. Affiliate programs are also highly rewarding for nonphysical products such as software or internet training courses. Intangible services can provide a large component of the sale price to the affiliate, typically shares as large as 75%. This is achievable since these products do not generally require transport fees or per unit costs. If a product was sold for $100, the affiliate would earn $75 of that sale!
In summary, an affiliate program works as follows:
1. The affiliate inserts a link to a service on their site. This link is frequently backed up with a comparison, review or a call to action.
2. A possible client who clicks the link on the affiliate’s website will be directed to the affiliate service such as Clickbank or PayDotCom.
3. The affiliate service adds a cookie on the visitor’s machine detailing the source of the visitor.
4. The visitor is automatically transferred to the product website.
5. When the potential customer clicks the purchase button they are directed back to the affiliate service.
6. The affiliate service facillitates the customer paying for the product.
7. The affiliate service gets the cookies on the visitor’s browser to calculate the initial source of the visitor.
8. By comparing the affiliate information read in the customer’s browser the affiliate service distributes funds to the affiliate.
So let’s look at an example for a specific piece of software to show how this works.
SpinChimp is a new spinner released by Aktura Technology. Aktura Technology sell the software for US$35 and offer the affiliate 50% of the sales price. Aktura Technology use Paydotcom to track their affiliates. Paydotcom requires affiliates to be a member so they can accept money for their advertising work. As is the way for Paydotcom the company providing the merchandise pays all the affiliate service costs.
After you have signed up, you need to look for the product in the market place. Each service also has a service page that can be reached by clicking on the service link in the marketplace. This link is processed by Paydotcom to check who to grant the sale to (as in step Three above).
Next you need to insert the link provided by paydotcom on your website. Sometimes affiliates create an article on the product, pointing out its good points and cons – you should never be untruthful or the people viewing your website won’t believe any information that your site shows. Usually product suppliers will provide some buttons or banners for affiliates to utilize to assist the affiliate attract clicks. In this example buttons and banners for SpinChimp can be downloaded on the affiliate page on the SpinChimp site.
SpinChimp is a little unique here in that it has a free 3 day trial period. Hence, often people who click on the add are unlikely to purchase the product on that day. Fortunately though, generally cookies receive a long life span – Paydotcom cookies exist for 6 months. Due to this any click of the buy button will always be redirected to Paydotcom. So if the purchase occurs straight away or after the trial period the affiliate will still get due transaction regardless.
So although the procedure is reasonably complex, it is not visible as far as the buyer is concerned, and only requires the insertion of a link on the affiliate’s site.
